Gibraltarians are heavy. This
is not to say they have over-consumed over the summer
months but that Gibraltar is rapidly becoming known
as a breeding ground for premium metal talent. Following
in the footsteps of bands like One minute silence
and Breed 77, the newest addition to this acclaimed
pedigree is Seven Sins.
Not surprisingly a seven-piece band, the Sins are
the newest incarnation of the outfit formerly known
as Reborn, formerly known as Fragile. For years the
band, in its many guises, have been at the forefront
of the local metal scene but somehow have never made
that extra step towards real success. While the core
members of the earlier bands remain, new blood has
only served to strengthen the lineup and provide new
avenues for experimentation. It seems that Seven Sins'
time is near.
With a new LP out titled 'Under the Influence' and
international interest mounting, the band are the
focus of intense expectation and support; the lead
singer of mega hit local band Breed 77 recently wore
a Sins T-shirt while performing at the Download Festival
in the UK.
With influences as far separated as reggae, psy-trance,
D'n'B, Yngwie Malmsteen and others, each Sin brings
his on flavour to the table. The melting pot that
is their rehearsal room provides a place for them
to further blend all these different perspectives
through the medium of metal. Tracks such as 'Concrete'
show a respect for the purists of metal albeit with
their unique punchy style bolted on. Other tracks
like 'Chivato' and 'Punjab' show the band at their
experimental best by introducing some ethnic sounds.
The former, with progressive rock influences lapses
into an almost industrial assault which never fails
to whip the fans into a mass of flesh thumping on
flesh. Punjab on the other hand shows the openness
of the band to extreme influences, in this case the
Eastern sounds of a sitar-like riff which builds to
a Staccato roar of a Chorus.
Combining raw metal riffage with percussion and synth,
a live performance by the sins is never a dull affair
and always one where you’ll be in danger of
hellfire if missed. The band possess a great stage
presence as their number alone fills any space to
bursting point. Add to this a volatile combination
of attitude, beer kegs, sweat and a wall of sound
and you have the ingredients for quite a spectacle.
All it takes is the catalyst of an ever-dedicated
mosh-obsessed following to ignite the touchpaper and
never stand far back enough. In fact it's surprising
limbs are not lost at Sins gigs!
Their heavy metal music immediately won the admiration
of rock fans in Gibraltar, and they have progressed
further by conquering crowds at the "Mysterious Wands"
festival in Dublin 2006.
Although a relatively new band, Seven Sins have already
released their debut album "The Open Book".
