GAITE or KAITE: Should be KITE. The Spanish is COMETA.

GALIPOTAZO : From GALLEYPOT, a kind of receptacle used in Hospitals to throw all soiled dressings, bandages etc "Hf COJIDO UN GALIPOTAZO!" Term used to define having 1 a dose of the POX after having paid a visit to one of the Red-Light districts in La Linea or Algeciras.

GANCHO : Wrong word used for FISH-HOOK, which should be ANZUELO. GANCHO is correct for all other types of hook except those for fishing.

GANDULAS : "ME VOY A OPERAR DE LAS GANDULAS". Should be GLANDULAS which means GLANDS in Spanish. However it is still incorrect to say so, since what is meant should be "ME VOY A OPERAR DE LAS AMIGDALAS" "I AM HAVING AN OPERATION TO HAVE MY TONSILS REMOVED".

GAÑOTE : Should be GAZNATE. The English is GULLET. "UN TIO GAÑOTE" Is a SELFISH person.

GARATA : To cheat when playing the game of CANONERAS. This entailed making a grab of a full hand whilst it was in flight. At the same time saying GARATA. This practice of snatching away all your CANONERAS was usually carried out by the local bullies; however, it appears that it was an accepted fact that thiscould happen legally if the word GARATA was said. Since then, GARATA has come to be used as an expression meaning, cheat, fraud or anything sinister.

GARDAO : Should be GUARD HOUSE. T1.e Spanish being GARITA.

GARRASPERA : Should be CARRASPERA. To be HOARSE.

GAS ELECTRICO : EL GAS ELECTRICO literally translated means THE ELECTRIC GAS. This refers to an Electric Cooker. When Gibraltar decided to do away with it's Gas system and substitute it with Electricity, all Gas Cookers and Stoves had to be replaced with electrical ones. Hence when housewives met they would say to one another "YA ME HAN PUESTO EL GAS ELECTRICO". "THEY'VE INSTALLED MY NEW COOKER".

GEEGEES : To go to the GEEGEES, is a discreet way of saying "I'm going to the Betting Shop." From a child's way of saying HORSE, GEEGEE. J

GERDA : Should be GIRDER. The Spanish is VIGA. Another local word for GERDA is VIG1 or VIGIN. There is a very well known saying "FOR THE VIGIN ON THE FLOOR AND THE HOSS CAN PASS", meaning "THERE'S A GIRDER ON THE FLOOR AND THE HORSE CAN'T PASS".

GIBO or GIBBO : English nickname for a GIBRALTARIAN. See CHINGONGO.

GINGIBIER : Should be GINGERBEER.

GIRI or GUIRI : Gibraltarian nickname for an ENGLISHMAN.

GOINA : Bad Spanish for BOINA, BERET.

GOMA : GOMA is Spanish for rubber. It is wrongly used to denote a Rubber Tyre which should be NEUMATICO. Una GOMA is the common name for a contraceptive or condom in Spain. "Se me pincho la Goma del coche, moto o bicicleta". "My car, motorcyle or bicycle has a punture".

GORGORITA : Name given to a little bubble, which should be BURBUJA. See also POMPORITA.

GORI : From GORY, meaning bloody and messy. In this context it is used to define a volatile situation e.g., "SE VA ARMA UN GORI", "A PUNCHUP IS ABOUT TO START" or "A VENIDO EN PLAN GORI." , "HE'S COME IN A VIOLENT MOOD."

GRAMOLA : Name given to a gramophone, the spanish is TOCADISCOS. GRAMOLA seems to have been a trade name.

GRAVENA : Name given to a brand of cigarettes CRAVEN 'A'.

GREVI : Bad English for GRAVY. The Spanish is SALSA.

GRUÑO : UN GRUÑO is a vulgar way of saying "SWEET F.. ALL" The word GRUÑIR means to GRUNT in Spanish.
GRUÑO therefore means I GRUNT. A favourite word of anglers when asked if they have caught anything!

GUILTY : "ESTAR GUILTY" means TO BE FAGGED OUT/ TIRED/EXHAUSTED"
