The Environmental Safety Group has now been established
for fives years and have been making progress ever
since. They have multiple concurrent projects such
as a media campaign, information campaign, legal campaign,
etc… where experts from as far as Barcelona,
America and Canada and the European Environmental
Commissioner are being involved.
The ESG consists of a group of volunteers
with Janet Howitt being the only full time employee
dedicating her time to the organisation every day,
thanks to firms which are collaborating with the group.
None the less, a lot of funding is still needed for
trips, sampling, bringing in experts to review the
situation, and more.
In September 2005 the ESG organised
the “Clean Up The World” day in Gibraltar,
which brought together over 300 people of different
ages from the very young to the not so young in an
act towards a cleaner Gibraltar. The ESG was very
happy with the turn out on the day, which helps to
make the government and other people in Gibraltar
more aware of the pollution problems that there are.
There is still a long way to go,
with a lot of projects in the pipeline such as the
need to recycle, which Janet Howitt believes is something
Gibraltar HAS TO LOOK AT.
