A member of the Loreto Order Sister Patricia now in
Peru, used to live in Gibraltar, taught in Westside
School and later became the headmistress of Loreto’s
junior school.
In April 2000 Sister Patricia answered
the request from the Loreto foreign missions and left
for Peru on October 2000. Sister Patricia opened a
school and brought the possibilities of education
to a shanty town outside the capital of Lima. Without
sanitation, electricity, or clean water it is one
of the poorest areas in the country.
Sister Patricia’s school receives
154 children daily, which have to be fed and kept
healthy. The government gives very little help towards
the school if any, as it fails to help with teacher
salaries, materials etc… It is with the help
of other people and organisations around the world
which Sister Patricia and the other teachers are able
to put a smile into the faces of these young children
and give them hope.
Whereas the school as a whole is
a success, Sister Patricia has also helped individual
students, such as a Hugo – a promising young
artist from the school, for which Sister Patricia
found a sponsor from Gibraltar to help him develop
his dream of becoming an artist.
Sister Patricia, school staff, and
the children are highly grateful for all the help
received, and wish to continue in developing the school
and the village.
