On the flats at Europa Point, near the entrance to Keightley Way Tunnel, is the ancient Nuns’ Well. It is thought to have been an ancient Moorish cistern, and its name is said to derive from the nuns who formerly looked after the nearby Shrine of Our Lady of Europa (q.v.). When the Duke of Kent, Queen Victoria’s father, was Governor of Gibraltar, he was determined to restore discipline to the garrison which had grown lax in the years following the Great Siege. He started by closing down 50 of the 90 wine houses and replacing them with his own brewery in order to provide “a wholesome supply of Beer for the Troops”, which was sited in this area. The venture did not last long however, and following a near mutiny, the Duke was recalled to England in 1803. His brewery was converted into barracks in early 1805 and all that now remains on the site is an open ground which is used by the Gibraltar Regiment for seaward target practice.
